Autumn Morning Surprise

Early in the week a look at the weather forecast for Friday October 5, 2007 looked GREAT. It would be the ferry move of the Steam Railroading Institute’s Pere Marquette 1225 from it's home in Owosso, Michigan south to Durand and then northward to Bay City on Rail America - Huron & Eastern trackage for two weekend Bay City to Grayling excursion round trips on the Lake States RR.

The day dawned cold and clear and the big Berk left right near the scheduled early departure from Owosso, as we heard the engine working through Corruna just south of Owosso the trackage swings easterly for a short distance and I hoped for a morning glint shot.  But what I heard at that distant road crossing was not the standard PM 1225 whistle, but a Booming Majestic sound of an old friend, that of N&W 611. As I listened chills when up my spine as memories of 611 chases of the past flooded my mind as the 1225 drew nearer.

As she approached and went by I noticed it was not an SRI engineer running, but it was Preston Claytor of Norfolk Southern steam fame and now working for Rail America.  He had brought along the 611’s whistle; I could not imagine what memories were flooding his mind at this time from long ago and the NS steam program.

Yes, I did get my glint shot with an 18mm wide angle of the 1225 rolling away with Preston at the throttle, but that crisp, clear golden Autumn Morning Surprise sure turned out to be and mean so much more than just a nice picture.
