Timeless
Two hostlers take a break at Chama, New Mexico on September 16, 2006 - almost 82 years after Denver & Rio Grande Western boxcar #3016 received a new roof at D&RGW’s Alamosa shops. The 64-mile segment over Cumbres Pass and around Toltec Gorge between Chama and Antonito, Colorado are all that remain of the D&RGW’s former 3-foot gauge tracks between Durango and Alamosa. The picture is timeless because these two railroaders continue a tradition that hasn’t changed since the first locomotive turned a wheel on steel rails – never walk when you can ride, and never stand when you can sit.
